Jean’s Journey to Independence at Harrier Grange

When Jean joined us at Harrier Grange Care Home in 2023, she was recovering from a stroke that had significantly affected her mobility. She was initially bed-bound, fully dependent on our care team and required two team members and a full-body hoist to assist with transfers. Coming from a close-knit community and known for her sociable nature, Jean wanted a care setting where she could rebuild her strength while staying connected with others. Her family chose Harrier Grange for our welcoming atmosphere, expert nursing support and commitment to helping residents regain independence through personalised care.
Regaining Confidence and Rediscovering Independence
From the moment Jean arrived, our dedicated management, nursing and activities teams worked closely with her and her son to create a tailored care plan. Through regular physiotherapy sessions, gentle exercises and emotional support, Jean’s determination began to shine. Over the course of the year, her progress was remarkable. She went from needing full medical and mobility assistance to walking with a frame and the steady guidance of one staff member.
Even after experiencing a temporary setback following a fall, Jean’s resilience never wavered. With reassurance and true determination, she once again regained her mobility. Jean soon became a familiar figure around the home, taking part in daily walks along the corridors, enjoying visits to fellow residents’ rooms and joining outdoor strolls whenever the weather allowed.
Our Activities Organiser Sarah shared, “Jean was always eager to join in all activities. She particularly enjoyed quizzes, which she said kept her mind active, and armchair exercises so that she could maintain her fitness as well. She was very determined to engage in all activities regardless of the topic, as she often shared that these helped her keep her independence and stay mobile.”

Jean also rediscovered many of her lifelong interests during her time residing with us. From gardening and painting to forming close friendships with fellow residents, Jean had such a positive impact on our community at Harrier Grange. One of her proudest achievements was contributing to over 11,000 steps during our September sponsored walk in support of Race Against Dementia. Her spirit and perseverance inspired everyone around her and embodied what can be achieved with compassionate support and determination.
